The economy is real bad right now and we need to focus that FIRST to fix it. CI is not EMERGENCY or life-threatening so therefore whoever needs CI can wait. CI is last priority we have to worry about. FOCUS on economy is main priority, not CI. Use hearing aids for now and/or use ASL.
Thank you.

Definitely, the deaf community in Australia is really annoyed about the government’s failure to look out for people who just want to be a part of society.
But we are fighting for these services to be provided! It will happen one day!

Hearing aids and ASL aren’t necessarily useful to every one of those needing the cochlea implants. What if you lost all your hearing overnight with no remaining hearing at all? Hearing aids are useless in those cases, since they only amplify sound, which has to be processed by the remaining hair cells to send to the auditory nerve to send to the brain. If there are no hair cells left, then nothing can be sent to the brain.
And only a small minority of hearing-impaired people even know or use ASL. If, say, your father lost his hearing overnight and he was hearing all his life, why should he learn ASL when most hearing people do not know ASL?
